The undersigned certify that having examined into the state of
Major South Paine, we
find his condition to be as follows. It appears he has constantly resided in Tropical Climates for a period of 40 Years—34
of which have been passed in the public service, and his constitution, although originally strong, is now so much impaired, that, in our opinion, a
change of climate is absolutely necessary for the prolongation of his life. In addition to the
functional derangement of the
liver, spleen, and other viscera, he has been subject for many
years to a serious, long protracted and obscure disease of the left kidney, which he believes to have been originally brought on by a fall from
his horse on the night of the 19th in India in the year 1816.
Throughout the greater part of the year 1849
he suffered very acutely from pain in the region of the left Kidney extending along the ureter towards the
Bladder, the cause of which remained doubtful, in consequence of his having had stricture of the urethra, until then
of long standing. On the passage of a bougie three times through the stricture the urethra occasioned
with severe agony for some days, confirming the impressions previously entertained of the nature of
his disease. Our diagnosis was
partly founded on the knowledge that in the year 1838 whilst stationed with his Regiment at Fort William Calcutta on the 26th March
after a long period.
